Social Relief of Distress (SRD) is an initiative the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) took to provide financial support to millions of South Africans. This payment helped a lot of people in critical situations. More than 18 million vulnerable people are currently getting payments from SASSA grants. The Social Refief of Distress grant may be increased in September 2025 by around 5%. Still, this may not be enough to provide full support to the vulnerable South Africans. The President of South Africa, Cyril Ramaphosa, has declared that the SRD grant would be extended until September 2025. There is no official information about the increase. There is a certain chance that it may just be rumours.
When SRD Payment Will Be released in September 2025?
The SRD Grant will be distributed between 25 and 31 September 2025. Applicants must check their status for the exact date, as funds will take approx. 2 to 3 days to reflect after processing.
SRD Payment Increase September 2025: Eligibility Criteria
- Citizenship or Residence: The individual must be a permanent citizen of South Africa or must be currently residing in South Africa.
- Income: This grant is for those families who have either low or no source of income. The monthly income must not exceed R624. Before applying, an individual must provide valid proof of his family’s income and assets in order to qualify for this grant. To know more about the value set by the South African government on income, you must refer to the official website of SASSA or South African Government.
- Age Requirements: The age of the individual must be between 18 and 59 years old.
- Employment Status: The individual must be either unemployed or have a very poor source of income in which he is not able to manage his basic expenses.
- No Other Social Grants: If the individual has applied for or is claiming any other grant, then he becomes eligible for this grant.
How to Apply for SRD Grant 2025?
Follow the steps given below to apply for the SRD Grant 2025:
Choose An Application Method
There are three types of application methods to apply for SRD grant 2025. However, you must apply using one method only, whichever is suitable for you. Those three methods are:
- WhatsApp: In this method, you have to send a message through WhatsApp to 082 046 8553. In the message, provide your personal information. You will get a reference number, an OTP, and a link. Click on the given link and enter your OTP to verify your account.
- SRD Official Website: Go to the official website of SSD. Enter your mobile number and ID number and click on “Send SMS.” After this, you will receive a 6-digit OTP. Enter the OTP number on the website and click on “verify pin.”
- SASSA Chatbot: Go to the official website of SASSA. Then, click on the SRD R350 Grant assistance chatbox. Enter your ID and mobile number. Choose the option to apply for the SRD R350 grant. Then, click on the SRD website link provided by the SASSA Chatbot. Follow the steps given by the SRD website.

Fill out the Form
To fill out the form, provide your personal details, such as:
- ID Number
- Full Name and Surname
- Gender

Choose Your Payment Method
- If you’re applying with a bank account, then you must provide necessary documents related to your bank account, such as your bank name, account number, account type, and branch name. After this, agree to T&C and submit it.
- If you’re applying without a bank account, then you must provide the required details, such as the payment option—Cash Send. After this, agree to T&C and submit it.
Receive an SMS
Individuals will get an SMS with their banking details. The SRD R350 grant will be active after receiving the SMS.
SASSA Verification and Validation
SASSA verifies your personal details, including ID number, name, and surname, against the Department of Home Affairs database and matches the ID number with approved databases like UIF, SARS, and NSFAS. Fraud risk scoring is conducted in partnership with fraud prevention entities using the ID and mobile numbers. After this procedure, your application number is either approved or declined. After submitting, you can check the status of your SRD Grant application in a few weeks.
